Karey's CD

The Third ToteTuesday was another resounding success!  Over $3,329.00 was raised on this day alone, totalling the three ToteTuesdays to over $9,000!!!!!  Plus my two favorite totes were both purchased at Glorious Donation amounts (over & above the Go-for-the-Gold preset limits!)  Woo Hoo!!!

Best of all, Karey Bresenhan has turned her donation into a continuing gift as she is offering  copies of her CD of photographs of the flowers in Monet's Giverny gardens to anyone who donates $50.00 to the American Cancer Society through Fiberart For A Cause.  Karey is the Honorary Chairperson of Fiberart For A Cause and has given her support to this effort in so many amazing ways!  Thank you Karey!!!

I have made my donation and can hardly wait for my CD to arrive.  Don't you want a copy of Karey's floral CD too?

If you would like a copy of the CD, follow these 3 steps:

1.  Make a $50 donation through Fiberart For A Cause here.
2.  Send an e-mail (Subject line:  KAREY B. CD) with your snail mail to  Virginia at Virginia(at)VirginiaSpiegel.com
3.  Virginia will forward your name/address on to Karey who will zip a CD out to you.  Easy Peasy.

Deadline to donate and order your one-of-a-kind CD is Sunday, February 28.

PLEASE NOTE:  Your $50 donation to the American Cancer Society through Fiberart For A Cause includes the right to use any or all of the images, copyright free, for personal, non-commercial, non-exclusive use.  You DO have the right to use the images in quilts but not to produce multiple quilts of the same image for sale. You do not have the right to pattern the images or publish them in hard copy or online.

another Art Call: Blurred Boundaries - Mixed Media

Since I've posted an earlier art call, thought I'd add this one too --
the 2009 Exhibit of Blurred Boundaries, Mixed Media Fiber Art

fabrications
Entry deadline WAS June 20, 2009

NOW EXTENDED to June 28, 2009

Theme: The definition of Fiber Art has evolved greatly over the past few years, opening up a new range of possibilities to artists working in various disciplines. Fiber artists are incorporating more mediums into their work, creating unique art that reaches across previously defined boundaries. Artists from other mediums are discovering the infinite possibilities that fiber can offer, also creating hybrids that are eye catching and moving. Blurred Boundaries seeks these arttworks for a week long exhibition honoring the ingenuity of mixed media fiber art.

A quick rundown on the exhibit:

Curator: Lynn Krawczyk

* Mixed media fiber art exhibit - work must contain a minimum of 25% fiber in order to qualify for the exhibit - otherwise anything goes!

* The exhibit will run in conjunction with the fabulous and exciting Fabrications Retreat in Kalamazoo, Michigan from August 30 - September 4, 2009. The exhibit will also be open to the public.

* Open to U.S. residents only.

* 2D and 3D work accepted.

* Work may be for sale (a very low 15% commission fee), there will be a $100 People's Choice Award and everyone who is in the exhibit will receive a small package of mixed media goodies for use in future work.

* Submission of images is done entirely online (no need to mail CDs!), the entry form is filled out online (less paper to print!) and you have the option of paying the $25 entry fee by either Paypal or personal check. Enter up to 3 pieces.

The full guidelines can be downloaded as a PDF at the exhibit's website here:

Open Studio Day in La Grange

On Friday, February 27, 2009 at the Great Expectations Creativity Center in La Grange, Texas, Karey Bresenhan held an Open Studio Day inviting quilt and fiber artists to come view the work created by the two Artists-in-Residence, Virginia Spiegel and Carol Moore. It was a wonderful day spent hobknobbing with over 70 fellow artists .... and the lunch was tasty too!

Here is a sampling of the hand-dyed wool roving Carol brought with her to use during her month-long stay in La Grange.

This is a close up view of Virginia's painted fabric pieces.

Carol and Virgina pose during a lull in the conversation. They are standing in front of Carol's piece that was juried into the "Oh Canada" exhibit to be seen at International Quilt Festival shows this year.

Virginia is talking with Karen Stiehl Osborn about one of her pieces which is made of Lutrador. I love the transparency of this piece. Displaying this art in the window on this beautiful sunny day where the Texas greenery can be seen beyond is a perfect touch.

The room slowly filled as everyone arrived, coming in twos and threes. In the back corner you can glimpse more of Virginia's work.

Karey is a gracious hostess. She is welcoming everyone to her Texas ranch, and introducing the Artists-in-Residence, seen below.

Seated is Ruth Moore, Carol's mom (who traveled in from Toronto two days earlier), behind her is Virginia Spiegel (floral jacket) and Carol Moore. They are quite excited to be sharing their new pieces created during their month-long stay at the Creativity Center.

After lunch, many others shared their artwork. One of my favorites was seeing Jamie Fingal's three apron pieces (no photos -- sorry -- but check out Jamie's article in issue #23 of Cloth-Paper-Scissors magazine, March/April 2009 or watch for an upcoming Quilting Arts episode)

Frances Holliday Alford brought many stickers, decals, stamps and more -- which she shared with anyone who would still long enough to decorate a postcard -- it was wonderful fun. She sent me off with a few more postcards of hers that she wishes to get more cancellation stamps on!

Here is Frances, her smile and one of her heavily stickered postcards.

Ruthie Powers, also from Austin, is beginning a new adventure -- she's designed some amazing stamps, which include mirror images where the negative/positive spaces are reversed. Here is Kim DeCoste (Education Manager of Quilts, Inc.) demo-ing different ways to use Ruthie's stamps. Is that Iris of MistyFuse next to Ruthie and listening too?

Before heading home for the day, I popped into the Copper Shade Tree gallery in Round Top to see the "It's Not A Quilt ... Or Is It?" fiber art show that was currently going on. This wall features one art piece by each of the features 18 artists in the show. There are some amazing Quilters & Fiber Artists in Texas! Be sure to drop by if you are in the area soon, as the show will be up for a bit longer.
