I love paper piecing and I had no idea that I did .... that is until I volunteered to be a pattern-tester not knowing that the patterns were all paper-pieced ones!
Here are two from recent pattern testing gigs ....
This Geometric USA pattern is due to be released later this month by Quiet Play (aka Kristy Lea in Australia). Check her many patterns on Craftsy (www.craftsy.com/profile/quiet-play-s-pattern-store ) & Payhip -- or browse thru her awesome posts on Instagram ....
I finished the USA on July 4th, so added (digitally only right now) the "Happy 4th of July" across the top. I'm pondering doing a paper pieced red-white&blue USA to put there but haven't decided.
I also tested this amazing lighthouse pattern, also by Quiet Play.
The model sailing ship was hand crafted by my dear Papa Herb (may he rest in peace). I stitched up the sails for him and the ship is named for his sister Edna (also of blessed memory). Papa Herb is/was my father-in-law and I still miss the quiet times we shared -- we were the two craftsy people in the family at the time.
The Geometric Lighthouse was released this spring and a bonus pattern to the "Release the Kraken" block of the month that Quiet Play and Gnome Angel are hosting. These two creative Australians have teamed up as "Quarter Inch of Quirk" for this block of the month (I'm guessing it is the first of more that will come). Check out hashtag: "release the kraken b-o-m" on IG for more of their joint block-of-the-month quilt (there are mermaids, sea creatures, and much more!). By the way, the website for Gnome Angel (aka Angie) is www.gnomeangel.com and the website for their joint venture is www.quarterinchofquirk.com/
An important reminder (or lesson, or tip) is to ALWAYS be sure to double check your "printer settings" before printing your paper piece patterns.
Most every pattern will have a test square that (once printed) will
measure to be an accurate 1" square. Print your patterns at 100% and
then be sure to measure your test square. When you do this, your
finished paper-pieced block will end up the size as stated on the
pattern (ask me how I know? and no need to ask how many times I forgot
to measure my tester square before piecing the entire block...)
Look carefully above -- my 1" square is SMALLER than the 1" ruler markings -- this is not a good sign. If they do not match, go back and carefully examine your printer settings .....

New list of finishing goals ....
Here is my current top ten (plus 2) list of projects that I aim to finish by the end of September.... All have indeed been started and yet are lingering too long in this unfinished limbo state.

2) bind my Oopsie Daisy quilt (& label)
3) finish my cross stitch ABC Words of Wisdom
4) buttons and buttonholes on peach plaid shirt
5) stitch up rayon peach top
6) quilt "Dream" quilttop (or will it be a pillow? or pillow case?)
7) quilt "Geometric USA" then finish into mini quilt or pillow
8) finish assembling 2015 Row-by-Row (water theme)
9) finish piecing, quilting, binding & label the latest Thangles pattern
10) dress and garnish my first spirit doll (maybe more than one)
11) bonus: quilt and finish my original Instagram logo mini-quilt (and finish an identical twin for a future swap ...) pattern by Lori Holt (IG: beelori1; her website: www.beeinmybonnetco.blogspot.com/)
12) might as well go for an even dozen: finish any old UFO that I re-discover in the next two months .... (hee hee hee - there are many that I've forgotten about!)
This is my official list for the Finish-Along group effort -- teams of fellow finishers are wonderful spirit-boosters! Check out this link or this one for more information and join (if you act fast .....).
Thank you to all the Finish-Along hostesses and prize donors and participants for inspiring me to get things DONE!
I am happy to report that I am linky number 87 for the 3rd quarter of 2017 Finish-along fun.

Joy of Quilts show - a few favorites
The Quilt Guild of Greater Houston held their bi-annual quiltshow "Joy of Quilts" recently. Here are some of my favorite award-winners ... not all of them, just a few of my favorites. Let's start with this view of the Winner's Circle:
These are some of the first place ribbon winning quilts on display at the front of the gallery, as one enters the show!
The quilts are (left to right): Welsh Beauty by Carolyn Butler, Best in Hand Quilting category; Tuscan Dream by Jackie Hillman, quilted by Mary Jo Yackley, Best in Pieced Wall Hanging Large;
B'nai Mitzvah by yours truly - me!, quilted by Pam Biswas, Best in Modern Quilt;
Passing Fancy by Fran Urquhart, quilted by Mary Jo Yackley, Best in Mixed Technique; and
Red Delight by the Golden Triangle Quilt Guild (it is their 2016 raffle quilt), submitted by Dot Collins and quilted by Martha Vincent, Best in Group Quilt category.

This is my first quilt to win a First Place ribbon - ever - so please forgive me for showing it again. Click here to learn a little more about the making of this quilt. I hope to win more ribbons at other shows .... or at least to defend my title at the next quilt show put on by my traditional guild, the Quilt Guild of Greater Houston.

Patriotic cross stitch
On road trips, I like to have handwork projects with me to keep my fingers busy.
This is one of the projects that I brought along on this summer's road trip (we are visiting many college campuses ....). It is a small patriotic Mary Engelbreit pattern and kit that was given to me.
It stitched up quickly and I finished on America's Independence Day!
Happy Fourth of July!

Veterans Day 2011
Happy Veterans Day to many many more who have served or who are currently serving in our Military.
This quilt is titled And Our Flag Was Still There and was created by Melinda Bula of El Dorado Hills, California. It appeared in the 2011 International Quilt Association's show that was open one week ago in Houston, Texas.
| And Our Flag Was Still There by Melinda Bula |
On the placard near this quilt are Melinda's words:
Attending my son's graduation from Marine Boot Camp in August, 2010, I was moved by the young men who are willing to put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms. I consider myself patriotic, but nothing prepared me for that day. This is for all the families like mine, who raised proud and devoted young Americans who have and will continue to protect the United States and what it represents, with their lives.
Melinda, thank you for sharing your colorful quilt and its heartfelt message with us.
This quilt is an original design by Melinda Bula. She used commercial and hand-dyed cotton fabrics, 30 weight rayon Sulky thread, and Quilter's Dream cotton batting. To create her quilt, Melinda used fusible applique techniques as well as thread painting techniques.
To see more wonderful quilts (think lovely flower blossoms), please check out her website at http://www.melindabula.com/
Melinda also has a blog (doesn't everyone these days?). Her blog is called Melinda's Cutting Garden (great name!). Read about her adventures in Houston by clicking here.

Reflecting...
The tenth anniversary of 9-11 has arrived
with much reflection, thinking back and remembering simpler days.
My first (or one-and-only?) Presidential quilt.
Note: the presidential blocks were "inked" with crayons and archival pens.
We do treasure our life in the land of the free, the home of the brave.

Happy Veteran's Day
Today, November 11, is Veteran's Day in the United States so this post is in honor (and in memory) of the many Military women and men who have served our country.
detail of the quilt below
Thank you to all the USA Military Veterans, and especially to my Sister-in-law Mary, my brother Garry, my dad Louie, and my Papa Herb (may he rest in peace). Here a few quilts inspired by the USA flag.
Betsy Ross Never Imagined This
by Nancy McLerran of Santa Rosa, CA
This lovely crazy quilt was exhibited in the Mixed Technique category of the International Quilt Association show recently in Houston. In her statement, Nancy says "I wanted a quick Independence Day crazy quilt" (hmm, quick and crazy quilt don't seem to go together in my mind!) Originally planning to finish in one month, Nancy's quilt turned into "a three-year odyssey" with this lovely result. Her design was inspired by a Sisters, Oregon poster titled "Patriot's Needle". Nancy won an award in the 2010 Road to California quilt show.
Other flag quilts have been exhibited in previous Festival Shows. The quilts shown above and below are from the 2008 Festival show in Houston. I wished I recorded the name and maker of both quilts ... but sadly, I did not.
Flag patterns and kits are abundant. Below is a pattern available through Embellishment Village.
I have not made a flag quilt ... yet. But thought I would share the fleece flag I made in 2007, even if it is inspired by the Texas state flag rather than our national Stars and Stripes.
Texas flag blanket
made with the students of Mrs. Williams' 4th grade class of 2007-08
currently in a private collection
Students in my son's 4th grade class helped design and create this flag. Each student decorated one of the puzzle pieces, inspired by things special to Texas. The flag was in the annual school auction, helped to raise money for the PTO and now is in a private collection. I discovered something fun about the dimensions of the Texas flag while making this blanket ... did you know that the three rectangles of color are all the same size? and that the longer side of the rectangle is exactly double the shorter side? Of course today, you can find ready-made fleece blankets in the Texas flag design ... or be daring and design your own!
